A countdown timer for anything

Enter hours, minutes and seconds or tap a preset, from 10 seconds up to 60 minutes. A ring shows the time remaining at a glance. You can run several timers at once, each with its own controls, which is handy when cooking or managing a class.

How to use the timer

  1. Type a time, or tap a preset to start immediately.
  2. Pause, resume or reset each timer whenever you need to.
  3. Choose an alert sound and volume, and press Preview to test them.
  4. Optional: enable desktop notifications so you see an alert while working in another window.
  5. Press Fullscreen on a timer to display it large.

Accurate, even in a background tab

Many simple web timers count down by subtracting one second at a time. Browsers slow down that kind of code in background tabs, so the timer falls behind. This timer instead records the exact moment it should finish and compares the current time to it, so throttling cannot make it drift. Running timers even survive a page reload.

The sound and notification still need the page to be open and the device awake.

Examples

  • 3 to 5 minutes: brewing tea or a short stretch break.
  • [25 minutes](/timer/25-minutes): a focused work session. For full cycles with breaks, see the Pomodoro timer.
  • [10 minutes](/timer/10-minutes): a quick tidy, or a presentation time limit.

You can share any duration as a link, such as /timer/25-minutes. To measure time going up rather than down, use the stopwatch.

Frequently asked questions

Can I run more than one timer?

Yes. Each timer runs independently with its own pause, reset and fullscreen controls.

Does the timer keep running if I switch tabs?

Yes. It stays accurate in a background tab because it works from a fixed end time. It will not ring while the browser is closed or the device is asleep.

Why didn't I hear the alert?

Check the volume here and on your device, and that sound is enabled in Settings. Starting a timer with a click also gives the page permission to play sound.

How long can a timer be?

Up to 23 hours, 59 minutes and 59 seconds.
