Keep Your Screen Awake

One click stops the screen from dimming or locking while this page is open and visible.

Screen can sleep normally

Browser compatibility

This uses the Screen Wake Lock API, available in current versions of Chrome, Edge, Safari and Firefox. It needs a secure connection and may be refused on low battery.

Browsers release the lock when you switch tabs or minimize the window. While this is on, it is requested again automatically when you come back to this page.

Stop your screen from turning off

Press the button and your screen stays on while this page is open and visible. This is useful when you are following a recipe, reading sheet music, presenting, or watching a dashboard without touching the device.

How to use it

  1. Press Keep screen awake.
  2. Check that the status says the screen is staying awake.
  3. Leave this tab visible. Press the button again when you are done.

How it works

This page uses the browser's Screen Wake Lock API. It only prevents the screen from dimming and locking; it does not change your system settings, and nothing remains active after you close the tab.

The browser releases the lock whenever the page is hidden, such as when you switch tabs or minimize the window. While it is turned on, this page requests it again as soon as you come back.

When it might not work

  • Old browsers: the feature is available in current versions of Chrome, Edge, Safari and Firefox.
  • Low battery: some devices refuse the request while battery saver is on.
  • Managed devices: work or school policies can still lock the screen.
  • Closing a laptop lid or pressing the power button will still sleep the device.

The same option is available directly on the digital clock, and the flip clock can use it in fullscreen.

Frequently asked questions

Does it drain the battery?

It keeps the screen on, which is one of the larger uses of battery on most devices. Turn it off when you no longer need it.

Will it keep my computer from sleeping?

It prevents sleep caused by inactivity while the page is visible. It does not stop you putting the device to sleep yourself.

Do I need to install anything?

No. It is a built-in browser feature, and it needs no special permission on most browsers.
