What to expect from a browser alarm

Alarms ring only while this tab is open and your device is awake with sound on. They are not guaranteed if the browser is closed, the device sleeps, or the operating system suspends the page. Do not rely on them for anything critical; use a device alarm as a backup.

A simple alarm clock in your browser

Set one alarm or as many as you need, directly in this page. Each alarm can have its own label, repeat pattern and sound, and you can edit, switch off or delete it at any time. Alarms are saved in your browser, so they are still there the next time you open this page.

How to set an alarm

  1. Choose the hour and minute, or tap a quick alarm.
  2. Add a label if you like, such as "Take a break".
  3. Choose whether it rings once, daily, on weekdays, on weekends or on days you select.
  4. Pick a sound and press Preview to hear it.
  5. Press Add alarm, and keep this tab open.

What browser alarms can and cannot do

Browsers do not let a page make sound until you have interacted with it, which is why adding an alarm or pressing Turn on alarm sound is required after each visit. Alarms can only ring while the page is open and the device is awake. If the browser is closed, the laptop lid is shut, or a phone suspends the page, the alarm will not ring on time. When you return, the page tells you about any alarm it missed.

For this reason, please use your phone's built-in alarm for anything critical, like an early flight or medication. This page is best for reminders while you are at your computer, such as a meeting, a break or the end of a study session.

Examples

  • A weekdays alarm at 9:00 AM to start work.
  • A one-time alarm for 3:30 PM to pick someone up, labeled so you remember why.
  • Several short reminders through the afternoon, combined with a Pomodoro timer.

If you need a fixed amount of time rather than a time of day, use the online timer.

Frequently asked questions

Will the alarm ring if I close the tab or browser?

No. The page has to stay open. It is also not guaranteed if your device sleeps or the operating system suspends the page, so use a device alarm for anything important.

Why do I need to press a button to turn on sound?

Browsers block sound until you interact with a page, to stop sites from playing audio unexpectedly. One click on the page is enough for that visit.

How does snooze work?

When an alarm rings, choose to snooze for 5 or 10 minutes. It rings again after that time, then continues with its normal schedule once dismissed.

Will it ring in a background tab?

Usually yes, as long as the browser is running and the device is awake. Background tabs are checked regularly, and the tab title changes while an alarm rings.
